You will need a passport to travel to Spain.  If you do not have one, then you will need to allow about six weeks for the processing of passport applications.

Please keep in mind that there is legislation currently pending regarding an upcoming plan that mandates that all international travelers will eventually be required to carry a valid passport.  You may visit the State Department’s web site for current updates regarding this legislation:  http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_3013.html

It is important to factor in that this pending legislation will effect volume and potential processing time, and ultimately turn-around time for you to receive your completed passport back from the State Department.

Long and short of it:  give yourself plenty of time!

Here are some good things to know:

  • It is possible to apply for and receive a passport in one day.  You will have to go to a regional passport office (for instance, the closest regional office to Portland, Oregon is in Seattle, Washington).  You must contact the appropriate passport office and determine what criteria they require in order to process a one-day passport application.
  • It is possible to pay an additional $60 per passport (postage fees will be in addition to this fee) to expedite the process.  (Processing timeframe goes from the normal 6 weeks down to the expedited 2 weeks.)
  • Be certain to confirm that you have all of the appropriate materials that you need in order to apply for your passport.
